The goal in the treatment of vein disease is to reduce or stop the backward flow of blood. The blood is then rerouted through nearby healthy veins. Previously, treatment consisted of a formal vein stripping that involved large incisions, removal of the diseased vein, scarring, and significant downtime. The latest techniques use small incisions, local anesthetic, minimal scarring, and little downtime.

Treatments take 45-60 minutes in an outpatient setting. Your doctor will decide which treatment is best for you based on ultrasound findings, symptoms, history, and physical exam.

Venaseal

Vein Services

The Venaseal closure system uses a formulated medical adhesive to permanently seal the diseased vein. Typically, only one injection of local anesthetic is needed. You are able to return to normal activities immediately and no compression stockings are required afterward. Your physician can let you know if this treatment is covered by your insurance.

Radiofrequency

The radiofrequency closure procedure (RF) delivers radiofrequency energy via a catheter inserted into the diseased vein.  The vein shrinks in the heat and eventually closes.  Anesthetic solution is injected to numb the area, empty blood from the vein, and protect surrounding tissue.  Ultrasound imaging is used to locate the treatment site, guide the catheter, and confirm that the vein has been fully closed.  Compression is worn for a few weeks after to aid healing and normal activities can typically resume in a few days.

Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is similar to radiofrequency. It involves placing a special laser-tipped fiber through a small catheter inserted into the diseased vein. As the laser is activated, the resulting heat at the tip causes a reaction in the walls of the vein causing them to stick together. The treatment is done under local aesthetic, compression is worn after the treatment, and normal activity is typically resumed in a few days.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a procedure that involves make small incisions over the surface of a vein and removing it with a hook. It is done under local anesthetic in the office. A compression bandage is applied after the procedure and normal activity is resumed soon afterwards.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is inserted into the vein to inject small amounts of a solution that causes the vein to become irritated and close. Typically, these closed veins will gradually be reabsorbed by the body and disappear. The procedure is performed in the office in sessions that last approximately 15-20 minutes. There is little to no discomfort. Compression stockings are worn for a few days afterwards and you can resume normal activity the following day. The number of sessions required will depend on the extent of the veins present. Slight bruising and some pigmentation may occur, but usually resolve within a few weeks to a month.

Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

This form of sclerotherapy is done under visualization with an ultrasound system. It gives the practitioner access to veins which are difficult to locate and keeps the procedure non-surgical.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatment can be used to treat the smaller veins that occur on the face and legs. Through the use of laser treatments, we are able to facilitate the removal of facial veins, spider veins, age spots, and dark spots conveniently. The light energy is specifically absorbed by the vein which is being treated, “erasing” it. Treatment may be combined with sclerotherapy for best results. Patients can resume normal activity immediately after.
