Meet the Doctors

Personalized Care By Qualified Professionals

Our philosophy is one of patient-centered, highly-individualized care provided by licensed professionals: nurse practitioners, physician assistants and board-certified physicians. Ferrer & Monaghan Vein and Aesthetic Center uses sound principles of art, medicine, and science. We understand the interplay of physical appearance, wellbeing, and self-esteem.

From the Egyptians, credited with inventing cosmetics, to the elaborate garments and white powdered wigs of the Renaissance, beauty has been a central theme in all civilizations. Ancient philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle held beauty among the highest goods, and that is where it remains for the professionals at Ferrer & Monaghan Vein and Aesthetic Center. Dr. Viola Monaghan describes beauty as “a reflection of inner and outer health, a balance of the whole person.

Guillermo Ferrer Ferrer & Monaghan Vein and Aesthetic Center

introducing

Dr. Guillermo Ferrer

Dr. Guillermo Ferrer earned his medical degree from La Universidad del Zulia, Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1980. He completed his internship at the Hospital General Santa Barbara, Venezuela in 1982.

He completed his post graduate training at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York in the general surgery residency training program 1982-1987. Here, he served as the Chief Resident of Trauma Service 1985-1986 and Chief Resident 1986-1987. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Newark Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey in 1987. He has done honorary work in the Honduras to assist the poor in need of surgical care at a Catholic Charities Hospital. He has also served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Cayuga Medical Center.

Dr. Ferrer began his career with a general and vascular surgery practice. He started the Northeast Surgical Group with Dr. Juan Agostini. He became interested in the treatment of veins and was the only physician in the area with a Venous and Lymphatic Medicine specialty degree. Dr. Ferrer became a pioneer in the Ithaca area treating all stages of varicose veins and spider veins, as well as venous diseases such as venous leg ulcers, phlebitis, and chronic leg swelling.

Dr. Monoghan joined the practice in 2003 and, with Dr. Ferrer, started the Ferrer and Monaghan Vein and Aesthetic Center. Dr. Ferrer currently dedicates his practice to venous and lymphatic medicine, as well as dialysis access.

“There is a misconception that varicose veins are just a cosmetic nuisance,” says Dr. Ferrer. “Left untreated, the condition can lead to clots, vein thrombosis, and limb-threatening ulcers. If we can treat patients early on, we can prevent the complications of venous disease. Technology has changed significantly. Now, we have laser, radiofrequency, and cyanoacrylate glue. Most procedures can be done in the office with little or no pain and very little down time. And, most treatments are covered by insurance.”

introducing

Dr. Viola Monaghan

Dr. Viola Monaghan earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA followed by a family practice residency at Williamsport Hospital, Williamsport, PA. Her interest in the treatment of venous disease began during her residency and continued through her fellowship training.

During her years in obstetrics and family practice she encountered many patients with venous disease and her interest in treating these disorders prompted her to pursue further education in this specialty. Dr. Monaghan began her formal training in phlebology in 1998.

She later joined the American College of Phlebology and established a mentoring relationship with Dr. Henry Train at The Vein Center of Central PA. In addition, she trained with Drs J.C. Agostini and G.E. Ferrer at Northeast Surgical Group. Experience included ultrasonography and Doppler imaging, exposure to extensive venous pathology and a complete program in vein care including sclerotherapy, laser therapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, PIN stripping and endovenous laser procedures.

Dr. Monaghan joined the Vein and Laser Centers of Central New York during the summer of 2003. Her interest in aesthetic medicine was a result of joining the practice and she began formal training in aesthetics at that time.
